Dysfunctional TV Couples That Melt My Heart

May 6, 2009

On TV we can find many different types of couples.  There are the cute and normal couples like Marshall and Lily on How I Met Your Mother and Monica and Chandler on Friends.  These kinds of couples are sweet and probably the kind of relationships we should aspire to have.  However, the couples that really melt my heart and make me go “awwww” are the more dysfunctional ones.  This might be because I’m slightly relationship retarded and these unhealthy disasters of relationships are closer to reality for me.  And also, let’s face it people, who doesn’t love a little dysfunction in their love life?  Now let’s take a few minutes to take a look at my favorite dysfunctional couples……

Barney and Robin on How I Met Your Mother

The Couple:

Manwhore Barney and emotionally unavailable, child hating, commitment phobic, and pretty much all around awesome chick Robin.

Backstory:

These two shared a torrid and saucy one-night stand back in Season 3, which (oddly enough) led Barney to fall madly in love with Robin.

Why They Make My Heart Melt:

I might be slightly partial to this couple, because – according to most my friends – Robin and I are the same exact person….but that’s besides the point.  These two characters are perfect for each other.  It’s the classic tale of boy sleeps with 200 girls, falls in love with one of them, struggles with his newfound feelings, and decides to attempt to settle down.  Who doesn’t love a story about a manwhore falling in love with a commitment phobe?  I get a little teary eyed just thinking about it.

The Future:

I’m hearing good things for this couple in the upcoming Season Finale.  So keep your fingers crossed for an official Robin and Barney coupling coming soon!

Chuck and Blair on Gossip Girl

The Couple:

Scheming, manipulative teenage billionaire Chuck and…well…scheming and manipulative Blair.

Backstory:

Blair gave up her virginity to Chuck in the backseat of his limo and ever since then these two have been playing games and dancing around each other.  Each loves the other, but is unwilling to let the other have the upper hand.

Why They Make My Heart Melt:

Games are sexy people – I don’t care what anyone says and these two take game-playing to a whole new artistic level.  The fact that both of these characters love the other for who they are makes my heart all warm and fuzzy.  It just shows that, even if you’re a slightly horrible human being, someone out there will love you just the way you are.

The Future:

Blair is with Nate now, which does not bode well for our couple.  But don’t give up hope yet, I’m hearing the Chuck and Blair saga is far from over.

Sawyer and Kate on Lost

The Couple:

Former conman Sawyer and Kate, a chick who’s got her own criminal past.

Backstory:

While held captive by the others, Sawyer and Kate got it on in a cage (say it with me people – HOT) and in last season’s finale Sawyer made the ultimate sacrifice by jumping off the helicopter to save Kate.

Why They Make My Heart Melt:

These two sizzle on the screen and have an undeniable chemistry.  Both are crazy good looking (it doesn’t hurt that Sawyer takes his shirt off a lot) and when two super hot people get together – I like it.

The Future:

Sawyer is now shacking up with Juliet in 1970’s Dharmaville, so the future isn’t looking too bright for our couple.

Burke and Christina on Grey’s Anatomy

The Couple:

Cool, calculating, and a bit of a softie Burke and cold, robotic Christina.

Backstory:

Christina and Burke first hooked up in the on-call room and this led to a long and complicated road to the altar.

Why They Make My Heart Melt:

This couple is an oldie, but a goodie.  These two are the poster-children for dysfunctional relationships and watching Burke force Christina to have actual human feelings was absolutely heartwarming.  Everything about their relationship was completely unbalanced.  From the way they decided to move in together to the way Burke proposed, nothing about their relationship was healthy……and that’s why I love it.

The Future:

Burke left Christina at the altar way back in Season 3 and Isaiah Washington, the actor who played Burke, was fired.  Soooo there’s no hope whatsoever.
